The Studio
I never begin with
a finished image in mind.
That's what I love most about painting. I simply begin, building layers and seeing where they take me. I never quite know where a painting will end up until it feels finished.
Painting allows me to switch everything else off. I get into my own little bubble and completely lose track of time. It gives me time for myself, even if I'm not physically alone.

I rarely begin with a finished idea. I might know the colours I want to work with, but that's usually where the plan ends. From there, I simply start adding layers and see where they take me.
Sometimes a painting changes direction completely, and that's part of the process I enjoy most. I stop when it feels finished, not because there's nothing left to add, but because I've reached the point where adding more might take something away.
Studying interior design changed the way I look at art. I don't imagine a painting hanging on a white gallery wall. I imagine it already living in someone's home.
I think about the people who will walk past it every day. I hope it's the kind of piece they still stop to look at years later, the one visitors ask about, and the one that quietly becomes part of everyday life.
I want people to stop.

“When I paint,
I get into my bubble.”
