Original Paintings

Every painting develops differently. Some change direction several times before they feel finished, while others come together almost immediately. What they all have in common is that they're created to become part of a home, not simply fill an empty wall.

Midnight Vein

120 × 50 cm

Acrylic, texture paste & gold leaf on canvas

Midnight Vein began as a completely different idea. When it wasn't working, I put it aside for a week before coming back to it with fresh eyes. To me, it changes every time I look at it. Some days I see snowy mountains, other times a forest reflected in a lake, with tiny gold lights in the distance. I stopped when it felt finished, before I reached the point of overworking it.

Hidden Strata

Acrylic, texture paste & gold leaf on canvas

Hidden Strata also began as a completely different painting. When I realised it wasn't working, I put it away before returning to it much later, covering it with new layers of colour. I deliberately allowed parts of the original painting to show through, rather like the layers inside a geode. To me, the deep greens suggest reflections in water, hidden earth and natural textures, revealing something new the longer you look.

Frozen Axis

100 × 50 cm

Acrylic on canvas

For this painting, I knew the colours I wanted to work with, but nothing else. I wanted to experiment with cracking the paint and creating an organic surface with bubbles and small openings in the layers. One of my favourite things about it is how it changes throughout the day. In softer light it feels calm, but when the sun catches the gold leaf, the painting comes to life and seems to glow with movement.
